Sunday 3rd April NICE / LEVENS / NICE

Total 67 Km

Liaison 42 Km – Spéciale 4 Km – Liaison 21 Km

Super Spéciale:

The route followed is the same as in 2004. It is in fact a mountainside firebreak trail, which crosses a small pass before heading back down towards the finish. The track is narrow and technical (although not damaging) and held a few surprises last year. As is often the case with these initial stages, competitors making mistakes have more to lose than to win, so care is needed!

After the stage, the competitors will take on board on the Daniele Casanova.
After one night on the boat they will arrive in Tunis and go to Le Kef for the first bivouac.

Étape 1 -

Monday 4th April

TUNIS / LE KEF

Transfert 5 Km – Spéciale 279 Km – Liaison 1 Km

Arriving from the port of La Goulette, the Rally caravan will travel by road to the first bivouac set up fairly near to town of Le Kef in the north of the country, near to the Algerian border.

Étape 2 -

Tuesday 5th April

LE KEF / TAMERZA

Transfert 5 Km – Spéciale 279 Km – Liaison 1 Km

The Race:

From the start to the end of the stage, competitors will follow the Algerian border. This will be the only special stage of the Tunisian week to offer such a variety of scenery, ranging from pine forests to crop fields, deserts and mountains… One of the event’s most magical moments will be when the track passes the foot of Jugurtha’s Table. This special stage will also be one of the most technical stages of the Rally, with a few entertaining mountain passes on the agenda. On the navigation side, the road book should be followed carefully, firstly because there is no GPS point (in fact, there are none throughout the entire event) and secondly because of the many changes in direction. A large oued is crossed towards the end of the stage. Competitors will again see a few border posts, reminders that Algeria is close by, before arriving at the Tamerza bivouac set up in the heart of the mountains.

In the bikes Cyril Despres (Gauloises KTM) came from behind to win the first Tunisian stage in convincing fashion 10’12 ahead of team mate Chris Blais and 15’58 in front of Carlo De Gavardo. Gauloises KTM team mate Andy Grider was 6th at 28’58.
In the cars victory went to Luc Alphand ahead of Masuoka (at 1’54) and Kleinschmidt (at 2’04). Jean Louis Schlesser (Gauloises Schlesser) was first 2-wheel drive buggy home in 5th place (at 4’12). In the T2 production class it was Jean-Pierre Strugo (Gauloises Mercedes) was quickest, finishing in 14th place (18’56) ahead of Rousselot with Pascal Thomasse (Gauloises Mercedes) 3rd T2 (16th at 21’00).

Jean-Louis Schlesser (Fra/Buggy Ford) : «I knew that the stage will be muddy, especially on the first third, we decided to fit the mud tires, but our buggy two wheels driving was inevitably handicapped on a slipping layout. The left mudguard   which yielded under the weight of mud"

Étape 3 -

Wednesday 6th April

TAMERZA / SABRIA

Transfert 19 Km – Spéciale 240 Km – Liaison 32 Km

The Race:

At the start of the special stage, the track offers very good going on sandy ground. Then it becomes narrow and bumpy before reaching the assistance point. Competitors will then cross the El Jerid chott, where they should make sure they stick to the ideal path if they wish to avoid the many hazards this type of terrain can hold. Leaving the chott, the first white dunes will remind all competitors to keep a close eye on their bearings (and tyre pressures too, if they want to avoid having to use the shovel!). The end of the special stage will be very fast as the competitors again cross the El Jerid chott before the finish line. A 32-kilometre liaison will then take them to the bivouac set up in the dunes, near to a stretch of water where the largest colony of dromedaries in Tunisia comes to drink.

In the bikes difficult navigation saw yesterday’s overall leader Cyril Despres (Gauloises KTM) lose valuable time, the Frenchman finally finishing in 5th place at 14’10 from the eventual winner Casteu. Second was De Gavardo (at 1’57) with Despres’ team mate Chris Blais (Gauloises KTM) 3rd (at 6’20). The American rookie Andy Grider (Gauloises KTM) was 8th (at 24’30). Overall Despres maintains his lead, 2’10 in front of Blais with De Gavardo 3rd (at 3’21).
In the cars victory went to Masuoka 1’55 ahead of Saby with Jean Louis Schlesser (Gauloises Schlesser) 3rd at 3’53. Overall Masuoka leads Saby by 3’40 with Alphand 3rd (at 4’58) and Jean Louis 4th at 6’24.

Cyril Despres (Gauloises KTM) 5th (at 14’10) 1st overall

“Early on my cap repeater stuck and it took me about 4 km before I realised. As I didn’t want to turn back I carried on to a village and found my way from there. Then at about km 175 I realised that I had a problem with my trip. It was turning but giving me 500 metres for every 2 km and that caused me to get lost again. I went into some really soft sand and must have stuck 10 times. One time the front wheel disappeared completely and I had to dig it out with my hands! In short, pretty much everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong. A day to forget in a hurry.”

Chris Blais (Gauloises KTM) 3rd (at 6’20) 2nd overall (at 2’10)

“I got lost twice but I don’t think I was the only one! At least I didn’t have any crashes – though I did get stuck three times. You know things aren’t going too badly when you get to a CP and Cyril (Despres) hasn’t arrived yet. Overall I’m pretty pleased with how my day went.”

Andy Grider (Gauloises KTM) 8th (at 24’30) 6th overall (at 38’58)

“I’m here and didn’t crash all day so I must have had a good ride! I got lost in the sand dunes before CP3 and didn’t trust my instincts when I should have. In the end I must have lost 15 minutes going around in circles. Eventually I used the GPS to get back into the corridor and picked up the right piste. My body feels very sore today after yesterday’s crash.”

Jean Pierre Strugo (Gauloises Mercedes) 20th (at 1.15’05) 16th overall (at 1.32’43)

“A frustrating day. At CP4 we were in 7th place and going really well when the gearbox got stuck in second. In all we lost 40 minutes…”

Staff comments:

Jean Louis Schlesser (Gauloises Schlesser) 3rd (at 3’53) 4th overall (at 6’24)

“The going was well suited to our car and we had no particular problems so I am a little disappointed that we didn’t do better.”

Étape 4 -

Thursday 7th April

SABRIA  / SABRIA

Transfert 52 Km – Spéciale 315 Km – Liaison 41 Km

The Race:

This first loop is totally new. At the start of the special stage, an off-track section over the only camel grass of the Rally will certainly conjure up happy memories for some! Next, the first small dunes will appear on either side of the route, which runs down an old oil track covered by drifts of sand. The competitors will cross the famous “pipeline track”, before beginning a section that will require all the drivers’ skills, taking them to the foothills of the Anti-Atlas mountains to the south of Tataouine. They will then bear west to reach KSAR GHILANE on tracks of varying quality. From KSAR, an off-track section over sandy terrain will take the vehicles to the BIDANE pass, before they continue on to the old well of BIRHAJ BRAHIM and end up on a fast track leading to DOUZ.

Despres and Alphand come back

First of three loops on the 24th Rallye Optic 2000 Tunisie, the fourth, 315 km stage turned out to be a tough test of man and machine, especially the first 80 kilometres of extremely soft, small dunes. A true desert stage, raced under a blazing sun, it shined in particular on Luc Alphand. The Frenchman took over from Jutta Kleinschmidt (VW Race Touareg), his Japanese team mate Hiroshi Masuoka and Bruno Saby (VW Race Touareg). On the bikes, Cyril Despres (KTM) waited for the first ‘big’ stage to regain his concentration. The winner of the last Dakar leads the Chilean De Gavardo (KTM 450) and his American team mates Blais and Grider (KTM) who continue their African rallye-raid apprenticeship. Winner of yesterday’s stage, David Casteu (KTM) was forced to retire with a broken engine.

The first competitors arrived more than 1 hour behind their estimated time of arrival – an indication of just how hard this fourth stage, run in a loop around Sabria, turned out to be. First car across the line was the Mitsubishi MPR11 of Luc Alphand – the ex-double world downhill skiing champion managing to take the overall lead in the process. By beating off the VW Race Touareg of German lady driver Jutta Kleinschmidt, and his team mate Hiroshi Masuoka, who got stuck twice while opening the piste, Alphand has managed to turn up side down the battle between the factory cars that has been raging since the start of the Rallye Optic 2000 Tunisie. Giving more than 20 minutes away to the leaders, after having stopped twice to change his tyre pressures, Jean Louis Schlesser (Schlesser Buggy) lead home his 2-wheel drive colleagues, starting with the VW TDI of Jean-Francois Guinot, the Honda buggy of Russian Shmakov, the SMG buggies of Gache and Vandromme, as well as the Pro-truck of Eric Vigouroux. Coming back from his clutch problems of yesterday, Thierry de Lavergne (Renault Proto) got back into the top 10.

In the T2 class it was the Sergey Sukhovenko (Nissan Pathfinder) who came out on top while the category leaders experienced an avalanche of problems. Running into electrical problems before the start Benoit Rousselot started last with just 5 cylinders while the Mercedes also had their share of difficulties. Despite losing over an hour Jean Pierre Strugo holds on to the overall lead 5 places ahead of the Russian.

On the bikes the day started badly for David Casteu (KTM) – the French amateur, who won the stage yesterday and the super special at Levens, was forced to pull out after breaking his engine just 20 kilometres from the start. An extremely physical first 40 kilometres saw Cyril Despres (KTM) put his talent and navigation skills to good use to increase his overall lead by over 10 minutes over the Chilean De Gavardo, who struggled to stay in touch on his ‘little’ 450. Behind these two ‘old hands’ the Americans Chris Blais and Andy Grider continued their African rallye-raid apprenticeship without giving away too much time. Second in the 450 class, Matteo Graziani (KTM) leads the Honda of Christophe Meillat and the Yamaha of Francis Gadioux. In the quads, despite the second stage victory of Christophe Declerck (Yamaha), it was Hubert Deltrieu (Polaris) who leads overall on this the second round of the FIM World Cup.

QUOTES
CARS

Luc Alphand (Fra/Mitsubishi MPR11) : « With three cars ahead of us it was much easier to attack. But even then, over the first 80 kilometres, there was plenty of opportunity to get into difficulty. We took an hour and a half to get through it. After passing Masuoka, who had got stuck, we backed off so as not to puncture running low pressures.”

Hiroshi Masuoka (Jap/Mitsubishi MPR11) : “Opening the piste was really not an advantage, especially on such a difficult special. We got stuck twice in the very soft little dunes. Those behind us took advantage of our mistakes. But tomorrow it will be the other way round.”

Jutta Kleinschmidt (All/VW Race Touareg) : « Once we got behind Saby we stayed in his slip stream and had no problems.”

Jean-Louis Schlesser (Fra/Buggy Ford) “We had to stop to let our tyres down, then pump them up again in the little dunes on the first hard sector. It is not my style to playing a waiting game, but that is what I am going to have to do until we get to the El Borma loop.”

MOTORCYLES

Cyril Despres (Fra/KTM LC4) : “That was a real day in the desert. The first 38 kilometres were really physical and you couldn’t relax for moment. Today was the first time since the Dakar that I have ridden totally concentrated from the start to the finish. After 5 years of navigating with GPS points it has taken me awhile to get used to the new method of using the road book with just the CAP to help you.”

Carlo De Gavardo (Chi/KTM 450) “Over the first section I didn’t have the power to ride in 3rd gear without getting stuck. Then Cyril left me on the faster section and pulled out about 4 minutes.”

Chris Blais (USA/KTM LC4) : “Thirty kilometres after the refuelling the motorcycle got stuck on a sand bar and I crashed. After that I rode carefully while trying to perfect my navigation technique and ignore the tracks of Cyril and Carlo.”

Andy Grider (USA/KTM LC4) : “Today went better than yesterday. I navigated alone until CP1. After that I followed the tracks of Graziani before realising that there was a easier piste just nearby.”

Christophe Meillat (Fra/Honda 450) : “I was lucky as I ran out of petrol on arriving at refuelling. It was a real desert stage and experience counts for everything in those conditions.”

Étape 5 -

Friday 8th April

SABRIA / EL BORMA

Transfert 9 Km – Spéciale 299 Km –Liaison 76 Km

The Race:

Competitors will first head south on one of the most demanding stages of the Rally. The first 60 kilometres are far from easy, crossing as they do rather soft, white dunes (trouble in store for anyone who does not follow their directions properly!). Then, heading towards KSAR GHILANE, the vehicles will follow the previous day’s track for 40 kms, returning to the BIDANE pass (easier to find when crossed for the second time). Once they reach KSAR GHILANE, they will take a track periodically covered by drifts of sand, heading due south alongside the Great Eastern Erg and leading the competitors to the pipeline running from EL BORMA. There are no particular navigation problems to speak of since the Great Erg initially provides an obvious landmark to the right of the trail, and subsequently, the track runs alongside the pipeline until the finish line. After a liaison of 76 kms on the track, the bivouac set up in the heart of the superb El Borma palm grove will offer comfort for our tired heroes.

In the bikes Cyril Despres (Gauloises KTM) once again won the special to increase his lead over Carlo De Gavardo to 16’31. A good day also for the American rookie Andy Grider (Gauloises KTM) who finished just 2’25 behind Despres. Chris Blais finished 4th (at 8’32) but maintains his 3rd place overall (at 24’46).
In the cars Jean Louis Schlesser (Gauloises Schlesser) was leading for virtually the entire special until he got stuck in front of a signpost in the middle of the dunes! In the end victory went to Saby ahead of Masuoka, Alphand, Kleinschmidt and Jean Louis. Overall Alphand preserves his lead, 4’45 ahead of Masuoka and 7’12 in front of Saby. Schlesser holds 5th at 28’53.

Staff comments:

Jean Louis Schlesser (Gauloises Schlesser) 5th (at 10’34) 5th overall (at 28’53)

“It was like a bad joke. 50 km from the finish, while leading the special, we came over a dune and found ourselves face to face with a signpost – in the middle of nowhere! We couldn’t go forward and we couldn’t go backwards and in all I reckon it took us 15 minutes to get going again – more than a little frustrating!”

Étape 6 -

Saturday 9th April

 EL BORMA / EL BORMA

Transfert 11 Km – Spéciale 290 Km – Liaison 3 Km

The Race:

More than ever, this now legendary stage will be the judge of the event. 100 % off-track and 100 % over sand, the 5th special stage consists of two loops. The 1st, 223 kms long, should not present many problems, but the second, 70-km loop will be much trickier, especially with 6 ridges of dunes to be found and crossed. After successfully scaling dunes as high as cathedrals, the slopes on the far sides will look like giant slides. While this second loop will naturally be great fun for the regulars, it will be optional for those competitors who have already experienced difficulties in the first. A sort of joker for those who want to see the event through to the end, since it is better to incur a heavy penalty than to finish the Rally among the dunes. As always, it is strongly recommended to keep an eye on tyre pressures.

In the bikes victory went to Carlo De Gavardo just 0’50 ahead of American rookie Andy Grider (Gauloises KTM) and Cyril Despres (at 2’46). The third member of team Gauloises KTM, Chris Blais, finished 8th (at 39’52) after crashing heavily at km 203. Momentarily knocked out he was finally able to carry on to the end. Overall Despres holds onto his lead, 13’45 ahead of De Gavardo, with Blais just holding on to his third place a few minutes in front of his friend Grider.
In the cars Jean Louis Schlesser (Gauloises Schlesser) won his first special of the rallye, finishing 2’10 in front of Luc Alphand and 2’39 ahead of Kleinschmidt. Overall Alphand holds on to his overall lead 8’04 in front of Masuoka and 11’51 in front of Saby. Schlesser holds his 5th place 26’43 behind the leader.

Staff comments:

Jean Louis Schlesser (Gauloises Schlesser) 1st and 5th overall (at 26’43)

“I started fifth this morning and we all finished pretty much together. It was a good day and we had no major problems but it is obvious that we are still very handicapped in relation to the 4x4 factory protos and something needs to be done with the regulations to allow us to fight on more equal terms.”

Étape 7 -

Sunday 10th April

EL BORMA / DJERBA

Liaison 45 Km – Spéciale 326 Km – Liaison 70 Km

The Race:

After spending their last night under the marvellous starry sky of the Tunisian desert, the competitors will head off towards the Mediterranean. At 442 kms, this is the longest stage of the Rally. After the first 10 kilometres, heading due south off-track, the competitors will turn east on a large, fast track leading to FORT JNEIEN. After a superb oued, they will cross a big Western-style canyon on a fast, technical track, then the tarmac at NEKRIF at the assistance point. The second part of the stage will be fast until the fort of KSAR JEDID. Then up until the finish line at NEFATIA, the drivers will have a great time, but navigation will be trickier, because of the many changes of direction at the end of the special stage. Once they have crossed the finish line and completed the 70-km liaison, survivors will be able to shake off the dust in Djerba’s comfortable seaside hotels before the final encounter the following day.

Storm brewing for podium places

After the heat of El Borma it was a shock for the competitors on the Rallye Optic 2000 Tunisie to race Djerba on the 7th stage in the wind and rain. At the end of the longest special of the rallye it was Luc Alphand (Mitsubishi MPR11) who took the win, to increase his overall lead. Just behind him Bruno Saby (VW Race Touareg took the second place overall off the Japanese driver Hiroshi Masuoka (Mitsubishi MPR11), while second on the special, Jean-Louis Schlesser (Ford Buggy) crept ever closer towards a possible podium finish tomorrow in Djerba. In the bike class Cyril Despres won the day’s stage, while the Chilean Carlo de Gavardo, victim of an oil leak, just holds on to second place overall ahead of the two American factory KTM riders Andy Grider and Chris Blais.

Opening the piste after yesterday’s victory on the El Borma loop, Jean-Louis Schlesser (Ford Buggy) enjoyed a wheel to wheel battle with Luc Alphand (Mitsubishi MPR11) who started just after him. A scrap finally won by the ex-world champion down hill skier who in the process increased his overall lead to 15 minutes – sufficient perhaps to start tomorrow’s stage in a slightly easier frame of mind. Something that won’t be the case for those just behind him. Second for the last three days, Hiroshi Masuoka (Mitsubishi MPR11) gave away more than 10 minutes today, following a navigation error and a puncture, and handed his long held place to Bruno Saby (VW Race Touareg), who finished third despite two punctures and a session with his shovel. With only 13 minutes seperating Saby (2nd) and Schlesser (5th) there are at least 5 competitors who could take the last place on the podium tomorrow at the end of the final 264 kilometres of the rallye. Getting up among the favourites, for a stage at least, the astonishing Honda buggy of Russian Shmakov finished 5th today while Jean-Francois Guinot (VW TDI Buggy) finished 7th to preserve his comfortable 6th place overall. The big losers of the day were were Philippe Gache (SMG Buggy), with suspension problems, and Isabelle Patissier (Nissan Pathfinder) who ran into serious difficulties with her engine. In T2 Jacky Bourgin (Mercdes ML) won the stage ahead of overall leader Jean-Pierre Strugo (Mercedes ML).

On two wheels, while Cyril Despres (KTM) won the stage to reinforce his overall lead, behind him the next three places closed up significantly following Carlo De Gavardo’s engine oil probelms. With the Chilean’s engine tightening up, the second placed rider overall was forced to stop and ‘borrow’ some cooking oil of a local aboard a camel! In the process Carlo conceded three quarters of an hour and is now menaced by today’s secnd placed man Andy Grider, who moves up to third place overall ahead of his friend, compatriot and team mate Chris Blais. Also in difficulties today was the Italian Graziani (KTM 450), who nevertheless managed to hold on to his 5th place overall, and his second place in the 450 class, ahead of the Honda of Christophe Meillat and the 2-wheel drive Yamaha of the impressive novice Francis Gadioux. In the quads, tomorrow’s final stage will also be a close run thing between Hubert Deltrieu (Polaris), Christophe Declerck (Yamaha) and Jean-Philippe Caillet (Bombardier). Winner of the day, Declerck once again takes over the lead, a little less than 8 minutes ahead of Deltrieu.

Staff comments:

Jean-Louis Schlesser (Fra/Buggy Ford) : “A really nice stage – I enjoyed myself today. A pity that Alphand is so much quicker than us. I gained some time on the podium candidates and reckon it will be worth fighting all the way to the end. It worked out for me when I did that on the 2002 Rallye Optic 2000.”

Étape 8-

Monday 11th April

DJERBA / DJERBA

Liaison 91 Km – Spéciale 264 Km – Liaison 37 Km

The Race:

The last day of racing on Tunisian soil will begin with a 91-km transfer. The first part of this third loop, a sandy track marked out by the many border posts on the frontier with Libya, will call on all the drivers’ skills for the last time in the event. Then from kilometre 142 to kilometre 212, vehicles will follow part of the previous day’s track, but heading the other way. After driving a few kilometres down a road open to traffic, the competitors will cross a chott before reaching a seaside track that takes them to the finish line, judged on the beach. Relief at last for some, but the hour of glory for others, who will be suitably honoured by the many VIPs present.

In the bikes, as expected, overall victory went to Cyril Despres (Gauloises KTM) (second on the special) who finally finished a more than comfortable 58’43 ahead of Carlo De Gavardo. Despres’ team mate Andy Grider (Gauloises KTM) completed the podium at 1.14’47 – an extremely impressive performance from the American rookie. His friend and compatriot Chris Blais (Gauloises KTM) was 4th (at 1.23’48).
In the cars it was Luc Alphand who won his first ever African rallye raid 11’40 ahead of Bruno Saby with Hiroshi Masuoka third (at 12’55). Jean-Louis Schlesser (Gauloises Schlesser) was 5th at 30’40.
In the T2 production class Jean-Pierre Strugo (Gauloises Mercedes) won overall, finishing 12th and almost three quarters of an hour ahead of his nearest rival Christian Barbier. Team mate Pascal Thomasse was 18th and third in T2.

Staff comments:

Jean Louis Schlesser (Gauloises Schlesser) 5th (at 7’32) 5th overall (at 30’40)

“Obviously I am a little disappointed to finish 5th but console myself with the knowledge that we drove a good race. We showed that in general our buggy is competitive against the factory protos – it is just in one or two place that we lose out – in the choppy off-piste and the stony going.”
