THE CHAMPIONS LINE UP

More than 60 car and truck teams and over 50 bike entries worked their way through scrutineering this morning at the sports stadium in Agadir prior to the start of the 5th Rallye ORPI Maroc tomorrow. And never before has a race counting towards the FIA World Cup and the FIM World Championship managed to bring together so many works teams and world champions, with no less than eight Dakar winners on the start line, ready to head off on a brand new route that will take them into the Moroccan Sahara and then back along the Atlantic coast.

One by one the competitors of the 5th Rallye ORPI Maroc passed, with good humour, through scrutineering at the ‘Hall Omnisport’ in Agadir. Among the first to queue up were the works Mitsubishis, and with the Pajero Evos of Peterhansel and Carlos Sousa taking the first rounds of the World Cup in Tunisie and Portugal, they must be considered favourites here. After a busy ‘learning year’ their team mate Andrea Mayer will also get to play with the big boys toy’s aboard a MMSP prepared L200 Pickup L200. The Volkswagen Touareg protos were also on show this morning, for the first time since the Dakar. After a week’s testing here in Morocco, Jutta Kleinschmidt and Bruno Saby are looking forward to seeing what their cars are capable of with their new co-drivers, Bobby Willis and Michel Perin alongside them. Second on the Tunisie and Portugal, Khalifa Al Mutawei, the current leader of the World Cup, is no doubt also looking to put his impressive BMW X5 up amongst the leaders, as will be Kenjiro Shinozuka, whose Nissan Pickup won here last year in the hands of the South African Giniel de Villiers.

Right behind the top 4x4 protos came Jean Louis Schlesser and his famous Ford Buggy. Three times winner of the Rallye Orpi Maroc, the talented constructor / driver will also be in the hunt. Behind him is a veritable Armada of buggies – the VW Tarek TDIs of Henrard and Guinot, and the SMG buggies of Philippe Gache and Benoit Rosselot, with the French rallye champion replacing Yves Loubet victim after his bicycle accident last Friday. Finally Thierry Magnaldi will be once again in his Honda buggy, but this time without a co-driver! There are plenty of challengers in the T1 production category as well, with Isabelle Patissier and her Nissan Pathfinder looking to get the better of the Mercedes MLs of Debanne and Strugo and the Toyotas of Jean Jacques Ratet and the ex-F1 driver Ukyo Katayama.

Jean-Louis Schlesser (Fra/Buggy Ford): The rules are taking the right direction, and even if more work needs to be done to make them fairer, I am looking forward to giving the 4x4s a run for their money. We have made a number of improvements including the fitting of a sequential gearbox
