Congratulations for all the staff !...

Dakar 2004 Winner- Two Wheels Drive  cat.

3rd at general clasification

This year, the Telefonica-Dakar is renewing with the traditions which built its renown in the past.
The start will be in France, the finish in Dakar, crossing 7 countries, once more taking in mythical places such as Pierced Rock, Elephant Rock and taking up again with Black Africa.
The route is one thing, the spirit another. Above all it will be the spirit which will fire the 26th edition and plunge us into the heart of human adventure and endurance.
For the second time, the start of the Telefonica-Dakar 2004 will be given from Auvergne on January 1, 2004. After a prologue spectacular on two parallel tracks in the Grande Halle d'Auvergne, a special stage in Narbonne and one in Castellon, competitors will be crossing Spain to Algeciras before unfurling on the African continent on January 3.
There they will renew with the wide-open spaces over rolling stages which will leave riders precious little time to adjust before starting out across Mauritania, in the heart of true, deep desert. This second part of the Telefonica-Dakar will be the event's « prime morsel », alternating short and long stages, built like an endurance race without assistance, during which entrants will have to dig deep into their own resources and draw on talent, strength and courage. Then on to Mali, Burkina Faso and Bobo-Dioulasso which this year will be hosting the rest day. Back to Mali and Mauritania before returning to Senegal where a classic but eagerly anticipated finish will be awaiting them in Dakar

« Il n'y a rien de plus beau que le désert. Quand on l'a connu, quand on l'a ressenti, rien ne peut plus nous en séparer.

Il attire et il garde chez lui tous ceux qui l'ont aimé et connu. »
Mano DAYAK

STAGE 4: TANGER > ER RACHIDIA

    Sunday 4th January 2004
    Liaison: 233 km - Special: 75 km - Liaison: 444 km - Total: 752 km

Things will get pretty serious during this first African stage. After 233 kilometres of very fast liaison, the competitors will take a very speedy track, but one that is scattered with many traps, from invisible potholes to hidden depressions on the edges of the route.
The track gradually narrows and more or less peters out in certain places. But the difficulties become fewer after the halfway point until the finish of the special. There then follow 444 kilometres of liaison.

STAGE 5: ER RACHIDIA > OUARZAZATE

    Monday 5th January 2004
    Liaison: 56 km - Special: 337 km - Liaison: 182 km - Total: 575 km

This stage brings together nearly all of the difficulties which the competitors will face. The start of the special is very arid and the tracks are sinuous and rocky. Then, gradually, Africa unveils its charms, as the route reaches the first wadis, canyons and kilometres of sandy tracks that lead the competitors to the highlight of this first part of the rally, the Erg Chebbib, an essential element of the race's passage through the Moroccan desert before a very fast end of stage.

    Tuesday 6th January 2004
    Liaison: 176 km - Special: 351 km - Liaison: 276 km - Total: 803 km

Once again Morocco promises a fulfilling race, with specials that require exceptional driving along unforgiving tracks where the slightest error may be decisive. This new stage between Ouarzazate and Tan Tan is there as a reminder. The pace will be very high from the start, but the drivers will soon be obliged to ease up to avoid the cairns and many bumps that litter the route. This is where it will be important to know how to drive fast and yet be constantly alert so as to reach the finish in one piece.

    Wednesday 7th January 2004

This will be a very long transition stage, swiftly taking the rally from Morocco to Mauritania. The competitors will leave at night for the 345 kilometre link to the border. The start of the special will be given on the Mauritanian side. After a very fast first part, this special will tackle the start of the dune fields, with the crossing of the Erg Oumaghawaba at the end of the stage. This is the only way to get to Atar, where the checkpoint will stay open all night to receive competitors.

    STAGE 8: ATAR > TIDJIKJA

    Thursday 8th January 2004
    Liaison: 34 km - Special: 355 km - Total: 389 km

This shorter stage will let the rally caravan catch its breath following the difficulties of the previous day. After the start in the bed of the Wadi Toungad, the competitors will discover a track that has never been taken up until now, starting at Far Aoun. The high speeds of the previous day now give way to technique, expert driving and careful navigation between the passes which are difficult to find. And all of this through breathtaking landscapes.

Piste assistance: Atar >> Néma 1 535 km.

    STAGE 9: TIDJIKJA > NÉMA

    Friday 9th January 2004
    Liaison: 3 km - Special: 736 km - Total: 739 km

A legendary stage! This part of the course has witnessed some of the race's most historic moments. It is also the longest and the hardest stage in the 2004 race. After a fast start through soft sand until Tichit, things get tougher as we reach the Well of Arate, the Rocher des Eléphants and the Enji pass where nearly all of the competitors were brought to a halt by a sandstorm 1985. But the magnificent landscapes make it easier to forget the difficulties of certain sections.

    STAGE 10: NÉMA > MOPTI

    Saturday 10th January 2004

Three days of almost rest ! It certainly isn't what most competitors of the Telefonica Dakar 2004 were expecting… For some, it even is something they were not hoping for… But after the first surprise or disappointment, all believe it is a good thing. The three last stages in a row proved to be perfect for those expecting a tough Dakar. For the others, it was time for a well deserved rest…
176 out of 400 on the start line in Clermont-Ferrand. Late in the morning, that was the number of competitors expected or having made it to Nema, end of … yesterday's stage. Indeed many, had only crossed CP3 (at 11h15) and still had another 248kms before the official finish line. The numbers just show how demanding this 26th edition of the Dakar is. Half of the starters on day 1 will be trying to make it to Dakar.

    STAGE 11: MOPTI > BOBO-DIOULASSO

    Sunday 11th January 2004
Due to the cancellation of a second consecutive stage, the Telefonica Dakar 2004 competitors left Mali (they'll be back on Jan 13) and hit the road to Burkina Faso and the city of Bobo Dioulasso. This time, the bikers jumped back on their machines to ride alongside the cars and the trucks for a 530km liaison on the road from Bamako. Meanwhile some riders were getting on a plane after finally making it to the finish line of the Nema special, while others were still struggling to get there… and then to the rest day on the 12th before 18h30 !
After a well deserved rest for most riders in Bamako, the liaison to Burkina Faso (4th country of this 26th Dakar) was mentally longer than expected. "A bit boring ! As of now, the important thing is to rest", admitted Richard Sainct (KTM n°1). Others like David Fretigne (Yamaha n°12), "can't wait to be back in the race !". Indeed, the top riders are finding it hard to cope with the lack of rhythm due to this forced break. "We're going to have to find the race rhythm that we've lost, rapidly", insisted 'Nani' Roma (KTM n°4). The Spaniard has command of the overall but with only 3min33 on Sainct. For an in-depth analysis of this 'battle royal', who better than Fabrizio Meoni (KTM n°3) : "I believe that Sainct and Roma will have a good battle for victory. Richard will ride his own race without worrying about Roma. For Nani, it'll be tougher because he has more pressure on the shoulders. He's never won it". The two time winner will be a close spectator of this fight for top spot, a place that he can no longer think about (11th at 2h42min). The Italian adds that for him the end is near. "If I had to take a decision now, I would say that this is my last Dakar. It's not a question of motivation but at 46, I think of stopping. One should know his own limits". Then again, isn't that what Fabrizio says every year at the same time ???
In the car race, the main question mark concerned the Nissan cars of Ari Vatanen (n°205) and Colin McRae (n°202). Where were they ? Well, at 12h30, they were among the nine cars that hadn't yet made it to Nema, finish of stage 9. A few hours later, at 16h30, the Scotsman had been seen on the way to Bamako after going through the Nema CP. On the other hand, the Finn was stopped again at 110kms of Nema with transmission problems. According to Fred Gallagher, Nissan spokesman : "We're expecting Colin tomorrow in Bobo but concerning Ari, we're not sure !"

    Rest-day: BOBO-DIOULASSO

    Monday 12th January 2004

A tranquil town and yet so full of life, in the mould of many an African town, with its wide avenues lined with mango and silk-cotton trees, Bobo-Dioulasso stretches out along each bank of the Houet river. It gets its name from the attempt to reconcile Bobo and Dioula ethnic groups and people are warm, a little like a large family. They make fine musical instruments and the town is even the centre for the balafon, a West African type of xylophone. To the east of the Great Market, the old mosque, a former animist temple converted to Islam in 1880, is one of the gems of the town.

    STAGE 12: BOBO-DIOULASSO > BAMAKO

    Tuesday 13th January 2004
    Liaison: 88 km - Special: 213 km - Liaison: 365 km - Total: 666 km

After the bush, the laterite ribbon of the track unreels through the tropical forest. The rest day in Bobo-Dioulasso will allow both men and machines to recharge their batteries before smoothly starting off again along 213 kilometres of track that would be worthy of the World Rally Championships. The going will be fast, very fast even, for the top drivers. But competitors will have to watch out for the handful of large obstacles which litter the special as it wends its way through the luxuriant Banfora forest.

    Piste assistance: 541 km.

    Wednesday 14th January 2004
    Liaison: 230 km - Special: 478 km - Liaison: 26 km - Total: 734 km

Leaving the capital of Mali by the north, the competitors will find themselves back in the Sahel and on their way to Mauritania.
After 200 km of lovely tarmac road comes an entirely new special.
This itinerary should please the drivers; it is a fast special along a series of beautiful sandy tracks, but with many changes of direction.
Navigation will make all the difference in this stage. At the time when we were making the reccees the wadis were in full flood, obliging us to make a large number of detours.

Piste assistance: 730 km dont 450 km de piste.

STAGE 14: AYOÛN EL ATROÛS > TIDJIKJA

    Thursday 15th January 2004
    Special: 548 km - Liaison: 4 km - Total: 552 km

The most beautiful sand stage of this rally!
The sandy track runs into some small dunes in the first few kilometres. These small dunes become denser as the course heads northwards.
The highlight of the day will be the crossing of the gigantic dunes which fall against the length of the 200-metre high Taskast cliff. This is the only way to climb the cliff, before reaching the finish 130 km away along a fast track.

    Friday 16th January 2004
    Liaison: 2 km - Special: 579 km - Liaison: 71 km - Total: 652 km

Having managed to avoid it ever since the start of the race, the competitors now have to deal with the terrible camel grass, along a 200 kilometre off-road route.
The day before the arrival in Dakar there is everything yet to play for. This special, requiring both good navigation and courageous driving, might still cause some upsets in the final ranking. Drivers will also have to keep a close eye on fuel consumption right until the last few kilometres and the crossing of the Amoukrouz dune field just before the finish.

    STAGE 16: NOUAKCHOTT > DAKAR

    Saturday 17th January 2004
    Liaison: 60 km - Special: 192 km - Liaison: 396 km - Total: 648 km

The finish of this 26th race will break with tradition, for although this last special will be raced around the Lac Rose, there will not be a line-up start on the beach, as is usual.
The competitors will do the opposite, starting one by one from the lake and finishing on the beach, where they will have to complete another liaison to reach the podium situated inside the Méridien, where the Awarding of Prizes will be made.

    Piste assistance: 580 km.

    STAGE 17: DAKAR > DAKAR

    Sunday 18th January 2004
    Liaison: 42 km - Special: 27 km - Liaison: 37 km - Total: 106 km

With the major difficulties now behind us, it is time for pleasure and driving in a special stage that is partly new, fast and windy.
Its twisting sandy tracks will take the competitors to the Mauritanian border. Then will come the liaison route to Dakar, resembling a great parade where thousands of Senegalese will line the road to cheer the survivors of this 26th Dakar in a climactic finale
