FIA
World Cup for Cross Country Rallies – Seventh Round
Sunday August 31st
15 cars 14 bikes and
2 quads passed today the Scrutineering and Administrative Checks of the
sixth edition of Por las Pampas Cross Country Rally, which counts for
the FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies.
These vehicles will start the first of the five legs that make up the
event, tomorrow, at 10, from the Starting Ramp located in Plaza San
Martín, the central square of the city of Córdoba.
During the day, in Superdomo Orfeo of the city of Córdoba, the drivers
of both cars and bikes had their first official contact with the event.
In the afternoon, the first Briefing took place, where the regulation
details of the event were published. The crews received the road book
for the first leg, which will lead from Cordoba to Mina Clavero. The
competitors will arrive in their final destination of the day at 14:30,
after driving for over 200 km.
It was a good opportunity to get to know the opinions of the different
protagonists, which was attractive for the eyes of spectators, as they
were able to observe from up close the powerful machines which will
start to travel along the geography of the Province of Cordoba.
The Frenchmen Jean Louis Schlesser stated:
“This race
cannot be planned in advance, even though I have taken part in it on
two occasions, the roads present a great variety of possibilities, so
we will decide our rhythm for the event on a leg by leg basis. I do
not think my previous experience will be an advantage over Sousa. In
fact, he has as many chances of winning as I have, he has proved it
all year long.”
His great rival during the event and during the Championship, Carlos
Sousa, caused a great impact by the strong construction of his
Mitsubishi L200 Strakar, a real prototype. When interviewed, he replied:
“I think this
will be a very even competition, and very complicated as well, I have
the feeling that it will be defined during the last day of the event.
I trust my car, and I do not think I will have serious problems. This
my first time in this event, and I think Schlesser has a advantage
over me on this, but Cross Country Rallies are always a surprise. I
cannot speculate and I do not want to, I have no possibilities to plan
very much in advance, I must drive as fast as possible if I am to win.”
With less pressure, as regards the fight for the lead, Komornicki, from
Poland, is here to complete the itinerary, without his habitual car, but
with a, rented to the Argentinean team Motor Service Sport. Komornicki
stated:
“I do not
really know car, we ran some tests, but I will have to adapt to it,
and change my driving. I understand I will have to be careful with the
car if I am to reach the end, I will be happy if I finish within the
first 5 competitors at the end of the event.”
His rival is the French Jean Pierre Strugo, who participated in Por las
Pampas Rally once before, and plans to defeat the Polish driver, with a
Mercedes ML 430. After the scrutineering, he expressed his opinion:
“I have to
comply with all the itinerary, my objective is to defeat Komornicki.
Even though I have already participated in this event, the course must
have changed a lot, I hope this is advantageous for me. The geography
of Cordoba is very nice, it introduces both driving and GPS sectors
which are very complicated. I will take it easy on the first day, and
then we will make a more convenient plan.”
The Argentineans Patxi Otaño and Pablo Gomes will fight the last two.
Otaño said:
“I want to
finish, make the turn. I have participated in all editions since 1999.
For this edition, I have rented my vehicle to Komornicki, this is why
I will drive the same Mitsubishi Jorge Recalde drove, when he won
1998’s edition. I am very proud of this, and I hope I will participate
in the fight for the first positions. We do not have realistic
possibilities against Schlesser and Sousa, but we will try to stay
behind them.”
For Pablo Gomes this is a greater challenge, he has already taken part
in this event, as well as in mythical Dakar, and he expects to have a
good performance here. As regards this topic, he stated:
“I am very
happy to be back in Cordoba, running Por las Pampas Rally is a great
experience, our vehicle is in perfect conditions, and we will attempt
a fast and secure rhythm. I still have a lot to learn, you never have
enough experience, and this is an excellent opportunity for it. I want
to be a part of the fight for the lead, and I am prepared for it, but
we shall only know the facts as of tomorrow.”
Bikes represented a separate show, two wheel competition fans observed
the work of the different teams, and those with the higher expectations
to succeed were also interviewed.
Marcelo Miti claims to be ready for tomorrow:
“I want to win
this race again, I trained real hard to be in good shape, I trust the
bike will show a good performance. I do know the surface, but the
course includes many areas where people from Cordoba have never been,
including me. This is why my local advantage is only relative. I will
try to arrive first in Mina Clavero, that will give me the chance to
set the pace of the race for the rest of the event.”
One of his rivals will be Laurent Lazard, who stated:
“I come from
running in Turkey, where I had to retire due to mechanical problems,
once again. I hope this does not happen again in Argentina. I run this
event twice, and finished second on both occasions, I want to win this
time, it won’t be easy but I trust I will overcome my bad luck and
claim the lead.”
For Jean Charles Mayol, this will be the third Cross Country event,
“Everything is so new to me, I come from the
tracks, and this category needs some time to adjust. I will use this
event to gain experience, but I will try to do it fast”,
he concluded.
Ezequiel Sundblad also has high hopes,
“I broke a
connecting rod on Friday, so I had to re-assemble the engine, luckily
I was able to test it, and everything is ready for tomorrow. I will
start calmedly, in order to evaluate the performance of the bike,
later on, I will make my attempt to reach as high in the standings as
I can. Cordoba is a challenge for everyone, and I am looking for good
results here.”
Por las Pampas Rally has already started, the challenge begins tomorrow,
with the crossing of the Sierras Grandes. Tanti, Cuchilla Nevada, Ambul,
San Lorenzo, and the classical Giulio Césare will see the competitors on
the run for the first time.

|
-
The first leg of Por las Pampas Cross Country Rally, countable for
the FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies, and ran along the roads
of the Province of Cordoba, had Carlos as the leader after 215 km of
race.
-
Both the driver and his car, a Mitsubishi L200 Strakar, adjusted
perfectly to the road, which included several cross country sectors.
They also had an excellent performance on the fast areas.
-
Right behind him came Jean Louis Schlesser, who had no serious
problems, but was still defeated by his main rival in the
championship.
-
Upon arrival at the bivouac, he stated: “I am very happy with
the course, I thought it would be faster, but the Cross Country
sectors are truly spectacular, the roads are narrow, and that was
beneficial for me. It reminds me of Northern Portugal. We had no
problems, the car worked perfectly, and tomorrow we will find out
whether starting in the first place is good for us or not. This has
just started, there is still long to go before realistic chances can
be analyzed.”
-
Schlesser’s opinion was a little different, “we had no
difficulties, we only found two closed gates, and had to stop to
open them. This did not mean a great waste of time; however, what
did present a problem to us was the fact that some roads were narrow,
and our car becomes slow in such conditions. It is difficult for us
to overcome the narrow paths, however, we did not waste too much
time. Tomorrow we will try to catch Carlos, in order to reclaim the
lead.”
-
Behind them, Jean Pierre Strugo occupied the third position, while
the driver from Poland, Komornicki, retired due to the break down of
his Toyota’s turbo, only 15km. before the end of the leg.
-
The best classified Argentine was the driver known by the nickname
of “Bodeguero”.
-
Among the bikes, Marcelo Miti set the pace from the beginning of the
day, and stated the following at the end of the leg: “I had a
complicated start. When I went on the Starting Ramp, the radiator of
my bike had a leak, so I sealed it and was able to continue. I lost
time at Pass Control 1, but from there on everything was OK. I hope
I continue like this, after I change the radiator, of course!”.
-
The highlight of the day was the retirement of Laurent Lazard from
the leg due transmission problems. Ezequiel Sundblad was surprised
to be on second place.
-
At midday, there were stressful moments, as a helicopter involved in
the event fell down. Luckily, regardless of the accident, both
persons in the helicopter didn’t suffer any consequences.
Nevertheless, they were taken to the Domingo Funes Hospital of the
city of Cosquin, for general medical studies. The Medical Report
from the Organization states the following: “the helicopter crew
members don’t show any fractures. Exams of thorax, cervical and
dorsal column upon others were carried out with positive results.
Both persons show concussions due to the fall and are being taken to
Córdoba for a definitive hospital discharge”.

Schlesser won the second leg for cars, Miti won for bikes
|
The Frenchman Jean Louis Schlesser is now leading Por las Pampas Rally,
the seventh round of FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies, after an
excellent performance during the second leg. Along the way, he defeated
his main rival, the Portuguese Carlos Sousa. Today’s route very
particular, as the same sectors were run twice. The roads were fast,
which resulted in bikes and cars running very close together, and cars
overtaking bikes. All of this took its toll on Sousa’s performance, as
he lost precious time. Yet, his greatest problem was getting lost in CP
4, which gave Schlesser an important .
At the Bivouac, the leader stated: “it was a very nice leg, a little
fast, but I managed to overtake Carlos in a Cross Country sector, when
he failed to find a detour. During the second run I was able to widen
the gap, as the car’s performance was excellent. Overtaking bikes is
always complicated, you have to be precautious in order to prevent the
accidents. Besides, you are blinded by the dust they produce. They are
so focused on driving, that at times, you have to be patient and wait
for them to clear the road. So far, everything is good, but Wednesday
and Thursday will be crucial for the final result. I don’t think we will
have roads this fast again, but the difference I reached today is
encouraging.”
Carlos Sousa seemed upset by his mistakes, but also hopeful as regards
tomorrow, “I wasted some time in trying to overtake the bikes on the
first run, I reached them on a fast sector, but wasn’t able to overtake
them, we then entered a complicated road, where Jean Louis managed to go
faster. The worst part was getting lost near the end of the first run,
when I couldn’t find the road for a few minutes until I saw Schlesser
driving along the right track. Once he was ahead of me, he got a greater
difference. I had a complicated day, but I liked the leg all the same,
I’ll try to gain more ground tomorrow.”
Among bikes, Miti set the pace again, he had no problems, when he set
foot on the Bivouac, he stated: “I’m less tired than yesterday, and
more relaxed, as there were no problems with the bike. I was very
careful along a sector with loose soil, as the surface underneath it is
usually hard, and you can’t see where you are going. The fast sectors
were fun, and the cross country ones were difficult. I hope I keep it
like this till the end.”
Ezequiel Sunblad suffered a fall when he had achieved the second
position, and had to retire. The Patagonian biker broke his left leg,
and was taken to a hospital in Mina Clavero. From there onwards, the
fight for the second place was held between Rodrigo Moreno and Santiago
Larroquette. Moreno finally finished second in the leg, while
Larroquette is second overall. |

Sousa finished a particular leg in first place,
but Schlesser is still first.
Miti keeps up the wide gap.
|
Por las Pampas Rally, countable for the FIA World Cup for Cross Country
Rallies, had a vibrating day, arguments between the leaders included.
The third leg found Sousa’s Mitsubishi L200 Strakar running perfectly,
and its driver was finished first. Between the start in San Lorenzo and
the neutralization in Serrezuela Sousa managed to achieve an advantage
of over a minute, and on his way to the finish, he was able to reach him.
The overtaking was never achieved, which brought about a heated argument
between them while at the control table.
After his arrival in the bivouac, the Portuguese driver showed his anger
over Schlesser’s behavior: “I reached him 40 km after the
neutralization, it was difficult to overtake since we were running along
a twisted road, with closed curves; further ahead, while on a Trial
sector, I made an attempt over the right, and when we were side by side,
he changed his trajectory and our cars touched. What annoyed me the most
was what happened afterwards, he slowed down repeatedly for me to reach
him, and then he accelerated, throwing rocks at my windshield in order
to break it. Such an unsporting behavior is very reproachable. In Cross
Country events, you must allow an overtaking from someone who is 2
minutes ahead of you, because he is driving faster. If you block the way,
you prevent him from achieving a wider gap. My team and I shall discuss
over we should lodge an protest or not.”
On the other hand, Jean-Louis Schlesser denied the conflict, he was only
worried about his vehicle, as it had not been as fast as expected,
besides he went off the road, which took its toll on the car. When asked
about the problem with Sousa, he stated: “he was never at my side,
he only came close to me on the last kilometers. I had difficulties to
see, which caused me to get off the road, we were driving behind a bike
and failed to see a closed curve, so we got off and crashed the lower
part of the car against some big rocks. Also, the windshield was crashed
against a tree branch. It was frightening but we didn’t waste much time
because we didn’t stop. I ‘m still firs overall, which is important for
tomorrow. I don’t think Sousa has any motive to accuse me, I blocked his
way because he was never able to reach me. The only thing in my mind is
the car and its performance for the legs to come.”
Right behind Sousa and Schlesser came the Argentinean Patxi Otaño,
driving his Mitsubishi Montero, who achieved a third place in the leg,
as his performance was excellent. He seemed satisfied and said: “the
first day I lost too much time while towing Komornicki up Giulio Césare,
at that point I thought they might still be able to go on. Today I felt
more adjusted to the car. I’m satisfied with my performance, and far
from Strugo, but I will still try to improve tomorrow.”
The Cordobese Marcelo Miti doesn’t slow down, and he is still setting
the pace for bikes. “I had a slight fall this morning, but it didn’t
cause me any problems. The return after neutralizing was fantastic, I
set an awesome rhythm. The team is asking me to slow down, but I feel
comfortable like this. It’s really encouraging when I ride along all
these small towns and everybody comes out to wave their Argentinean
flags. I’m relaxed, and haven’t been tired so far.” Miti said while
gaining strength at the bivouac. Behind him is Santiago Larroquette,
with a reaffirmed second place, while Damian Domber fights the Chilean
Osvaldo Gianinni over the third position.

Schlesser Widens the Gap.
Miti more relaxed.
|
The Frenchmen Jean Louis Schlesser claimed the lead of the longest
leg of Por las Pampas Rally, event countable for the FIA World Cup
for Cross Country Rallies, and thus managed to widen the gap between
him and Sousa, who was followed him in the leg standings. The day
had not started very well for him, as his team had to spend all
night at the Bivouac working on the damages caused by the off track
accident on the last kilometers of yesterday’s leg. Once the
assistance work was finished, they decided to test the car, but they
had another misfortune. While driven by a mechanic, the car crashed
into a private vehicle, and even though there were no serious
damages on the buggy, the assistance work had to be repeated.
At a certain point in the leg, Carlos Sousa found a closed gate,
which was indicated in the Road Book. Sousa opened the gate, drove
past it, and then closed it back, all of which is allowed by the
regulations. When Schlesser arrived at the gate, he chose to push it
down with his car, saving precious time in the process. His actions
are being analized by the Panel of Stewards, who are considering the
possibility of imposing a penalty.
If this penalty is finally imposed, it would not affect Schlesser’s
first place, as the time difference he achieved today is too wide.
As regards the advantage he said: “it was a good leg, I
didn’t waste too much time along the trial sectors, or in the rough
roads. I overtook Sousa on a river bed where my car had a better
performance. Later on near the end, the roads were really fast and
we achieved very good times.” When asked about the damaged
front of his car, he stated: “at one point, the dust in the air
was blocking my vision, and I suddenly hit something very hardly,
I’m not sure what it was. Fortunately the car wasn’t damaged.”
At the Bivouac, Sousa showed the frustration of a bad leg: “I
had terrible day today, perhaps driving first wasn’t beneficial for
me, in the morning I was confident that it would be a good day, but
it wasn’t. I wasn’t able to achieve a difference on the first part.
On the second half, we had to cross a humid river bed, and my car
had some problems, so Schlesser overtook me easily.” As regards
the rival’s advantage, he stated: “victories are only real at
the end of the race, I’m aware of the advantage, but there is still
a race tomorrow, I’ll attempt the fastest rhythm I can achieve”.
He also gave his opinion on the incident with the gate: “I
stopped, opened it and then closed it, which cost me some time,
because you have to take off the seat belt, get off the car and back
on, and finally lock the belt again. You don’t waste all this time
if you just hit the gate. We will not lodge a protest, because the
Officials were flying over the road and could see what happened
perfectly.”
The Cordobese Marcelo Miti repeated his performances from earlier
legs, but at a more conservative rhythm, he won the leg anyway, and
is now the clear leader: “I had a relaxed day today, the first
part had very twisted roads. Another difficult place was Copacabana
River, I had to drive very carefully, even the cars had a rough time
on this sector". Santiago Larroquette was fourth in the leg
standings, but still holds the second place overall, with a better
position than Chilean Gianinni.
